What are veneers?

Veneers are thin porcelain shells or laminates that have the same texture and colour as your teeth. They are used to cover surfaces of teeth whose appearance are spoiled by discoloration, cracks, or chipping. They can also be used to hide unsightly spaces and generally improve teeth aesthetics.

There are different types of dental veneers, but they are basically made of two types of materials–porcelain and composite resin. Which type you choose depends much on your preferences, but asking your dentist is always a good idea. Some people prefer porcelain veneers because they don’t look any different from natural teeth and they also don’t get stained easily. Others prefer resin veneers because they are thinner and thus don’t need removal of too much of the tooth surface.

When are veneers useful?

Porcelain or resin veneers have a number of applications in dentistry. As mentioned, they are usually used to conceal tooth imperfections.

1. Discoloration. Tooth discoloration can be due to simply years of coffee drinking, smoking,  unsightly dental fillings or even an adverse effect of exposure to too much fluoride. 
2. Gaps. Spaces between two teeth, especially those teeth in the front. They can be easily fixed through veneers, which eliminate the need for braces, which don’t fix the problem straight away.
3. Jagged Teeth. One of the most common complaints Dr Zukerman attends to is jagged or uneven teeth. This problem may be due to your genes or may be a result of an accident. If teeth misalignment or unevenness is bothering you, you can always have it fixed through veneers.
4. Broken Teeth. Accidents, old fillings, and aging can break your teeth. Serious cases of broken teeth may require extraction, but in some cases, veneers can solve the aesthetic issue.
